Abstract/Citation: The regulations, together with provisions inserted into the Employment Rights Act 1996 by the Employment Relations Act 1999, confer new rights to maternity and parental leave. The provisions relating to parental leave implement Council Directive 96/34/EC on the framework agreement on parental leave (OJ No.L145, 19.6.96, p.4).
Part I deals with general provisions including application, definitions etc. Part II deals with maternity leave including: entitlement; duration; commencment; compulsory maternity leave; redundancy during maternity leave; requirement to notify intention to return during a maternity leave period. Part III regulates parental leave, Part IV deals with provisions applicable in relation to more than one kind of absence. Schedule One regulates workforce agreements.
