Abstract/Citation: Applies to ships carrying more than 5 persons (other than fishing vessels). Part II requires employers to appoint a safety officer for the ship, who in turn may elect safety representatives. Safety officers are responsible for ensuring compliance with the provisions of the "Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seamen." Part III provides for the notification of dangerous occurences and of specified accidents to persons employed or carried on board. Gives effect to the Merchant Shipping (Minimum Standards) Convention 1976 (ILO Convention No. 147).
