Abstract/Citation: According to section 34, all Uzbek citizens shall have the right to form trade unions, political parties and any other public associations. Chapter 9 dealing with economic and social rights provides for the right to employment (free choice is guaranted), the right to social security (old age and disability benefits), the right to medical care and education. Pensions, allowances and other welfare benefits may not be lower than the officially fixed minimum subsistence wage. It entitles workers to paid rest, to fair conditions of labour and to protection against unemployment. It also prohibits forced labour, except as punishment under a judicial decision. Chapter 10 provides for guarantees of human rights and freedoms (equality of men and women, protection of minors, disabled and elderly persons). According to Chapter 13, trade unions shall be registered as prescribed by the law and have the status of public associations. They shall express and protect socio-economic rights and interests of workers and their membership is optional. Numerous provisions concern the organization of the State.
