Comprised of 9 Parts and 284 sections. Reforms the electoral system by setting up a "Mixed Member Proportional" electoral system to replace the Westminster derived "first past the post" system. Half of the 120 members of Parliament are elected by the "first past the post" method and half by way of a system of proportional representation. Sections 45 and 76-79 provide for special Maori representation in Parliament. The Act also establishes an Electoral Commission and repeals the Electoral Act of 1956.
