Abstract/Citation: The purpose of the Act is to prevent discrimination on the basis of sex and to promote equality between men and women in employment and public life. Public authorities are required to promote equality actively, in particular by removing obstacles. Equality is to be observed in training and education. Employers are to ensure balanced placement of men and women in various jobs and ensure equality in working conditions. An employee who has been discriminated against may be awarded compensation. Two new bodies are to monitor the Act: the Equal Opportunities Commission and an Equality Ombudsman. The Act supersedes certain provisions of the Employment Contracts Act (LS 1970 - Fin. 2 ... 1974 - Fin. 2).
