Abstract/Citation: | This is the first labour code of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Its 203 sections cover contracts, conditions of employment, occupational safety and health, inspection, training, employment services, workers' and employers organisations, collective bargaining and agreements, welfare services for workers and their families, mediated dispute settlement, and the establishment of a Supreme Labour Council. Many sections are followed by an explanatory note clarifying technical or procedural details. Section 6 prohibits forced labour and provides for the right freely to choose an occupation subject to the principles of Islam, public policy and the rights of other persons. Special provisions are made for night work; arduous, underground and dangerous work; one month's special pilgrimage leave once in a worker's lifetime; the working conditions of women and young persons (i.e.workers between 15 and 18 years of age, the employment of those under 15 being prohibited); etc. Section 130, which introduces Chapter VI on workers' and employers' organisations, stipulates that "the workers ... may establish Islamic societies and associations" to disseminate Islamic culture, to defend the achievements of the Islamic Revolution, etc. Section 131 provides that workers and employers may set up "guilds or trade unions".
