  ACUTE HAZARDS PREVENTION FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE & EXPLOSION Not combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.    See Chemical Dangers.    In case of fire in the surroundings, use appropriate extinguishing media.

PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST AND FUMES! IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
  SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID
Inhalation Cough. Sore throat. Burning sensation. Laboured breathing. Shortness of breath. Symptoms may be delayed. See Notes.  Use local exhaust or breathing protection.  Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer immediately for medical attention.
Skin Redness. Pain. Skin burns.  Protective gloves.  Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower for at least 15 minutes. Refer for medical attention .
Eyes Redness. Pain. Severe burns.  Wear safety goggles or eye protection in combination with breathing protection if powder.  Rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible). Refer immediately for medical attention.
Ingestion Sore throat. Burning sensation in the throat and chest. Nausea. Vomiting. Abdominal pain. Shock or collapse.  Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.  Do NOT induce vomiting. Give one or two glasses of water to drink. Refer immediately for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL CLASSIFICATION & LABELLING
Personal protection: particulate filter respirator adapted to the airborne concentration of the substance. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Sweep spilled substance into covered containers. Carefully collect remainder. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations.

According to UN GHS Criteria

DANGER
Harmful if swallowed
Causes severe skin burns and eye damage
May cause respiratory irritation
Very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects

Transportation
UN Classification
UN Hazard Class: 8; UN Pack Group: III

STORAGE
Store only in original container. Separated from strong bases, strong oxidants and food and feedstuffs. Dry. Well closed. Store in an area without drain or sewer access.
PACKAGING

ZINC CHLORIDE ICSC: 1064
PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL INFORMATION

Physical State; Appearance
WHITE HYGROSCOPIC ODOURLESS SOLID IN VARIOUS FORMS.

Physical dangers

Chemical dangers
Decomposes on heating. This produces toxic fumes of hydrogen chloride and zinc oxide. The solution in water is a medium strong acid. Reacts violently with strong oxidants and strong bases. This generates fire and explosion hazard. This produces toxic and corrosive fumes.

Formula: ZnCl2
Molecular mass: 136.3
Boiling point: 732°C
Melting point: 290°C
Density: 2.9 g/cm³
Solubility in water, g/100ml at 25°C: 432 (very good)

EXPOSURE & HEALTH EFFECTS

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and by ingestion.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is corrosive to the eyes and skin. The aerosol is severely irritating to the respiratory tract. Corrosive on ingestion. Inhalation may cause lung oedema. Inhalation of high concentrations of respirable particles (such as fumes) may cause Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), pulmonary fibrosis and death. See Notes.

Inhalation risk
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly when dispersed, especially if respirable particles (such as fumes) are generated.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS
TLV: (fume): 1 mg/m3, as TWA; (fume): 2 mg/m3 as STEL.
MAK: (respirable fraction): 0.1 mg/m3; peak limitation category: I(4); pregnancy risk group: C.
MAK: (inhalable fraction): 2 mg/m3; peak limitation category: I(2); pregnancy risk group: C

ENVIRONMENT
The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms. It is strongly advised not to let the chemical enter into the environment.

NOTES
Other UN: 1840 Zinc chloride solution, Hazard Class 8.
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort.
Rest and medical observation are therefore essential.
