  ACUTE HAZARDS PREVENTION FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE & EXPLOSION Not combustible but enhances combustion of other substances.  Risk of fire and explosion on contact with combustible substances or reducing agents.  NO contact with combustible substances, reducing agents or acids.    In case of fire in the surroundings, use appropriate extinguishing media.

PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! STRICT HYGIENE!
  SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID
Inhalation Burning sensation. Cough. Laboured breathing. Shortness of breath. Sore throat. See Ingestion.  Use local exhaust or breathing protection.  Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
Skin Redness. Skin burns. Pain.  Protective gloves. Protective clothing.  First rinse with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again.
Eyes Redness. Pain. Blurred vision.  Wear safety goggles, face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection if powder.  First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention.
Ingestion Abdominal pain. Vomiting. Diarrhoea.  Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.  Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Refer for medical attention .

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL CLASSIFICATION & LABELLING
Personal protection: particulate filter respirator adapted to the airborne concentration of the substance. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Sweep spilled substance into covered containers. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations. Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents.

According to UN GHS Criteria

Transportation
UN Classification
UN Hazard Class: 5.1; UN Subsidiary Risks: 6.1; UN Pack Group: II

Separated from combustible substances, reducing agents and food and feedstuffs. Dry.
PACKAGING
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.
BARIUM PEROXIDE ICSC: 0381
PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL INFORMATION

Physical State; Appearance
WHITE OR GREY-TO-WHITE POWDER.

Physical dangers

Chemical dangers
Decomposes on heating and on contact with water and acids. This produces oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. This increases fire hazard. The substance is a strong oxidant. It reacts violently with combustible and reducing materials.

Formula: BaO2
Molecular mass: 169.3
Decomposes at 800°C
Melting point: 450°C
Relative density (water = 1): 5.0
Solubility in water: poor

EXPOSURE & HEALTH EFFECTS

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol and by ingestion.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the nervous system. Exposure could cause hypokalaemia. This may result in cardiac disorders and muscular disorders.

Inhalation risk
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly when dispersed.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS
TLV: 0.5 mg/m3, as TWA; A4 (not classifiable as a human carcinogen).
MAK: 0.5 mg/m3; peak limitation category: II(8); pregnancy risk group: D.
EU-OEL: (as Ba): 0.5 mg/m3 as TWA

ENVIRONMENT
The substance is harmful to aquatic organisms.

NOTES
Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available.
Rinse contaminated clothing with plenty of water because of fire hazard.
