|ACUTE HAZARDS||PREVENTION||FIRE FIGHTING|
|FIRE & EXPLOSION||Highly flammable. Many reactions may cause fire or explosion. Vapour/air mixtures are explosive.||NO open flames, NO sparks and NO smoking. NO contact with oxidizing agents or incompatible substances. See Chemical Dangers. Closed system, ventilation, explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting. Do NOT use compressed air for filling, discharging, or handling.||Use water spray, powder, alcohol-resistant foam, carbon dioxide. In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water. Combat fire from a sheltered position.|
|PREVENT GENERATION OF MISTS! STRICT HYGIENE! IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!|
|Inhalation||Sore throat. Burning sensation behind the breastbone. Cough. Shortness of breath. Symptoms may be delayed. See Notes.||Use ventilation, local exhaust or breathing protection.||Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer immediately for medical attention.|
|Skin||Redness. Burning sensation. Pain.||Protective gloves. Protective clothing.||Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer immediately for medical attention .|
|Eyes||Redness. Pain. Burns. Watering of the eyes.||Wear face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.||Rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible). Refer immediately for medical attention.|
|Ingestion||Burning sensation. Nausea. Abdominal pain. Vomiting. Diarrhoea.||Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.||Rinse mouth. Give one or two glasses of water to drink. Refer immediately for medical attention.|
|SPILLAGE DISPOSAL||CLASSIFICATION & LABELLING|
|Evacuate danger area! Consult an expert! Personal protection: chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus. Remove all ignition sources. Ventilation. Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents. Do NOT wash away into sewer. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable non-plastic containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent. Wash away remainder with plenty of water. Then store and dispose of according to local regulations.||
According to UN GHS Criteria
DANGERHighly flammable liquid and vapour
Fatal in contact with skin or if inhaled
Toxic if swallowed
Causes skin and eye irritation
May cause respiratory irritation
May cause damage to liver through prolonged or repeated exposure
Toxic to aquatic life
|Fireproof. Separated from food and feedstuffs and incompatible materials. See Chemical Dangers. Cool. Keep in the dark. Well closed. Store only if stabilized. Store in an area without drain or sewer access. Provision to contain effluent from fire extinguishing.|
Put breakable packaging into closed unbreakable container.

|PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL INFORMATION|
Physical State; Appearance
Formula: C4H6O / CH3CH=CHCHO
|EXPOSURE & HEALTH EFFECTS|
Routes of exposure
Effects of short-term exposure
Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
|OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS|
TLV: 0.3 ppm as STEL; (skin); A3 (confirmed animal carcinogen with unknown relevance to humans).
MAK: skin absorption (H); carcinogen category: 3; germ cell mutagen group: 3A
|The substance is toxic to aquatic organisms. It is strongly advised not to let the chemical enter into the environment.|
|The occupational exposure limit value should not be exceeded during any part of the working exposure.
Rinse contaminated clothing with plenty of water because of fire hazard.
Check for peroxides prior to distillation; eliminate if found.
Crotonaldehyde is stabilized with water.
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential.
The CAS number is for mixed isomers (CAS 4170-30-3, EC number 224-030-0). Other CAS numbers: 123-73-9 (trans isomer, EC number 204-647-1), 15798-64-8 (cis isomer).
