1,4-Butanedicarboxylic acid
CAS #: 124-04-9
EC Number: 204-673-3

  ACUTE HAZARDS PREVENTION FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE & EXPLOSION Combustible.  Finely dispersed particles form explosive mixtures in air.  NO open flames.  Closed system, dust explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting. Prevent deposition of dust. Prevent build-up of electrostatic charges (e.g., by grounding).  Use water spray, powder, foam, carbon dioxide.  In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.

PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! STRICT HYGIENE!
  SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID
Inhalation Cough. Sore throat.  Use local exhaust or breathing protection.  Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
Skin   Protective gloves. Protective clothing.  Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.
Eyes Redness. Pain.  Wear safety goggles or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.  First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then refer for medical attention.
Ingestion   Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.  Rinse mouth. Rest. Refer for medical attention .

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL CLASSIFICATION & LABELLING
Sweep spilled substance into covered plastic containers. If appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Wash away remainder with plenty of water.

PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL INFORMATION

Physical State; Appearance
ODOURLESS COLOURLESS CRYSTALLINE POWDER.

Physical dangers
Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air. If dry, it can be charged electrostatically by swirling, pneumatic transport, pouring, etc.

Chemical dangers
Decomposes on heating. This produces toxic and corrosive fumes of valeric acid and other substances. The substance is a weak acid. Reacts with oxidizing materials.

EXPOSURE & HEALTH EFFECTS

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract. Inhalation of the aerosol may cause asthmatic reactions. See Notes.

Inhalation risk
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly when dispersed.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. Repeated or prolonged inhalation may cause asthma.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS
TLV: 5 mg/m3, as TWA

ENVIRONMENT

NOTES
The symptoms of asthma often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort.
Rest and medical observation are therefore essential.
Anyone who has shown symptoms of asthma due to this substance should avoid all further contact.
