An Act to consolidate and amend the law relating to the packing, marking, handling, carriage, storage, and use of certain flammable, oxidising, and corrosive materials, and certain compressed, liquefied, dissolved, and other gases.
The Act, dated 2 July 1974, covers the classes of dangerous goods specified in the recommendations of the United Nations Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods: gases (compressed, liquefied or dissolved under pressure); ethane, ethylene, hydrogen, methane or any other flammable gas; acetylene (compressed or dissolved, and contained within a porous substance); liquefied petroleum gas; chlorine; anhydrous ammonia; liquid oxygen; flammable liquids; nitrocellulose; fuel oil; calcium carbide; white or yellow phosphorus; oxidising substances; corrosives (acids, potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, aqueous ammonia, etc.). Provisions concerning issuance, cancelling, etc. of licenses for storage, haulage, use, etc. Duties and search powers of inspectors. Enforcement, orders to remedy defective situations or cease hazardous practices. Seizure of dangerous goods. Provisions respecting ships (refusal of clearance) and harbours. Penalties.
