CIS 79-296 Work Environment Act
Arbetsmiljölagen [en sueco]
This Act, dated 19 Dec. 1977, became effective on 1 July 1978. It applies to every type and sector of employment in Sweden, except work on board ship and work in the employer's home. Its provisions also apply to self-employed persons. Its primary objective is to ensure a satisfactory work environment corresponding to the nature of the work and the social and technological progress achieved by the community at large. The Act covers environmental problems such as monotony, stress and isolation, and worker participation in workplace improvement. Sections are devoted to: duty of employers and employees to co-operate in establishing a good working environment; duties of subcontractors operating on the same worksite; duties of plant physicians; notification of accidents and diseases; responsibilities of manufacturers of machinery and equipment; marking of hazardous substances and equipment; medical surveillance and record-keeping; young persons; working hours; employer-employee co-operation (safety delegates, committees, training); enforcement, etc.
