CIS 82-724 Benzene regulations
These regulations restrict the use of benzene to: production, processing or handling of benzene and motor fuels; chemical synthesis processes in which benzene is a major component; laboratory work. The TLV is: 5ppm for 8h TWA; a ceiling limit of 10ppm/15min not more than 4 times a day, with at least 60min between exposures. Safety measures to be adopted to limit exposure: local exhaust and general ventilation; emergency showers and eye-wash fountains; immediate removal of benzene spills; personal protection including respirators, protective dress, gloves, shoes, spectacles and head cover; periodic monitoring of workplace air at least once a week; recording of results (records must be kept for 20 years). Further sections on: employers' duty to inform workers of benzene hazards; warning labels on containers; medical surveillance (pre-employment and 6-monthly examinations, personal medical files); duty to notify the labour inspectorate within 10 days of any health impairment; transfer of affected worker to other employment.
