It prescribes laboratory and on-the-job tests, criteria and procedures for selecting subjects and for selecting and preparing articles, as well as maximum permissible values for heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature.

Usage of personal protective devices among Egyptian industrial workers
A systematic random sample of 405 workers from the metal, asbestos cement pipe, textile, and viscose rayon industries were interviewed using a prepared and tested questionnaire. Personal Protective Devices (PPDs), namely goggles, gloves, respirators, and ear defenders, had been distributed to all workers and were used by 31.4%. Usage of PPDs was associated with the educational level, duration of occupation, awareness of the work hazards, and knowledge about the purpose of PPDs. Marked association was found between non-usage of PPDs and discomfort, interference with job performance, and the psychological feeling of lowering the person's prestige by the wearing of PPDs. Non-usage was also associated with lack of maintenance of the device and absence of supervision of its usage. The most important factors were those related to the role of the safety staff and the discomfort of the devices.

Ergonomic aspects of personal protective equipment: its use in industrially developing countries
Personal protective equipment (PPE) as an ultimate source of preventing occupational injury is needed extensively in both industrialised countries (IC) and industrially developing countries (IDC). Comfort needs not being met seems to be a major problem resulting in the non-use of PPE. IDC which are mainly importing PPE from IC are confronting many ergonomic problems because the equipment designed for IC conditions is inappropriate for use in IDC due to significant differences in user body sizes, environment, tasks and working methods. Information obtained from manufacturers in IC and from health and safety authorities in IDC revealed that, while manufacturers place greatest emphasis on the protection performance of the equipment, the users in IDC refuse to wear it because comfort needs are not fulfilled. The need for maximum achievable comfort in the design of PPE is emphasised.

The substances known to form dioxins under the influence of heat (e.g. polychlorinated biphenyls or phenols) and the conditions under which they give off dioxins are reviewed. The protection afforded by the acceptable daily intake for adults of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzodioxin of 1 to 10pg/kg body weight is discussed. High-powered vacuum cleaners with activated coal filters are considered efficient in removing dioxin-containing soot after fires.

Chemical cartridge respirator performance: 1,3-butadiene
1,3-Butadiene recently has been classified as a potential occupational carcinogen. The performance of Scott organic vapour (642-OV), organic vapour/acid gas (642-OA) and acid gas (642-AG) twin cartridges was determined for 1,3 butadiene. A cartridge test system was developed to generate challenge concentrations of 100ppm and 1000ppm; an infrared analyser was used to measure breakthrough at 10ppm. The twin cartridges tested demonstrated reasonable adsorption capacity for 1,3 butadiene. Cartridge service life was inversely proportional to airflow rate; it was reduced at elevated temperature and humidity conditions. Breakthrough times were approximately three times longer at 100ppm than at 1000ppm. When clean air was drawn through cartridges saturated with 1000ppm 1,3 butadiene, desorption occurred readily. The rate of desorption and the peak concentration were dependent upon the temperature, humidity and degree of saturation.

Basis for a MAC for ammonia in the gas medium of isolating individual protection equipment (IMIP)

Studies on volunteers show that the combined action of ammonia (concentration 40mg/m³), oxygen and low barometric pressure (308mm Hg) during 12h exposure results in a significant decrease in mental and physical efficiency and a considerable increase of products of nitrogen metabolism (residual nitrogen and urea) in the blood. As a result, 40mg/m³ could not be recommended as a MAC for ammonia in the air inside IMIP. Persons inhaling gas mixtures with less ammonia (20mg/m³) did not show significant decreases of mental or physical efficiency or show accumulation of products of nitrogen metabolism. This ammonia concentration could be recommended as a MAC for persons wearing IMIP for 12h under low barometric pressure.

The wearing of personal protective equipment inevitably entails annoyances, restraints or inconveniences. The rules to be observed when introducing personal protective equipment are outlined. These recommend giving comprehensive information on the stress factors and the functions of a particular personal protective device, fixing a defined period of time for the exposed worker to get used to it and permanently looking after the worker who is wearing the personal protective equipment.
