Risk for reduced sperm quality among metal workers, with special reference to welders
A postal questionnaire was sent to men employed in the metal industry, certain other types of nonmetal industries, and other types of employment in which the factors suspected to influence sperm quality were not present. Out of the total of 3,119 men included in the investigation, 2,517 (81%) filled out the questionnaire satisfactorily. Semen analysis was performed for all 3,119 men. There was a greater risk for poor sperm quality among welders than among men not employed in welding. The risk for poor sperm quality was increased for those welders who worked with stainless steel.

The principle of informative labelling of silver brazing materials has been accepted by all French manufacturers and has been effective since May 1987.

Complete welding data intended as a help for making calculations and for introducing new production are included.

Dizziness and oculomotor dysfunction after welding
Yrsel som subjektivt symptom och oculomotorisk störning vid svetsning [in Swedish]
In this study information on symptoms related to welding was obtained by means of a qustionnaire survey comprising 323 welders. Fatigue and eye irritation proved to be common symptoms, while only 8% suffered from dizziness. In a second part of the investigation 7 welders afflicted by dizziness and 7 references were investigated with a battery of oculomotor tests before and after 30 minutes of welding. The results showed that the oculomotor function of the welders had been impaired prior to the investigation exposure but also that the dysfunction increased after 30 minutes of exposure to welding fumes, especially as regards eye movement gain. However, no correlation was found between changes in oculomotor function and the extent of exposure to any particular metal, nitrous oxides or ozone.

Exposure to lead during abrasive blasting and gas cutting

Abrasive blasting of bridge railings for removal of rust leads to lead exposure of workers in those cases in which red lead coatings were originally used. When 15 to 25L/h water was added to the blasting jet, lead exposure was reduced. In gas cutting of steel scrap coated with red lead, concentrations of 0.5-7.4mg lead/m3 were measured in the breathing zone. The use of supplied-air helmets or respirators in these types of work is considered necessary.

Effects on humans of high exposure to radiofrequency radiation - A study of health and exposure of plastics welding machine operators

113 radiofrequency radiation (RF)-exposed men and women in Sweden and 51 RF-exposed men and women in Norway were studied and RF fields around the operators' welding machines were measured. A reference group of 23 women, sewing machine operators and assembly workers, was chosen in the Swedish part of the study. The power density of leaked radiation from more than 50% of the welding machines exceeded the ceiling value of 220W/m2. The highest leakage fields were found near machines used in the clothing industry. This applies to electric as well as magnetic fields. Some 23% of the men and 40% of the women (37 persons) reported eye irritation, and more than 90% of the persons thought the symptoms were work-related. In Norway, eye irritation was less frequent, occurring in 21% of the men and 25% of the women. A high incidence of hand numbness was found in both studies. A local thermal effect of electric fields in the fingers may have caused the observed paraesthesia and abnormal 2-point discrimination. The conjunctivitis might be caused either by a heating effect of the electromagnetic fields or by irritating effects of plastic pyrolysis products.

Mortality in two cohorts of welders exposed to high- and low-levels of hexavalent chromium
A cohort consisting of 234 welders working on stainless steel and exposed to high levels of chromium was selected. According to an earlier survey the hexavalent chromium exposure of such welders was often above 20µg/m3. Another cohort consisting of 208 railway track welders exposed to low levels of chromium was also selected. The participants of both cohorts had welded for at least 5 years some time between 1950 and 1965 and were followed for mortality until Dec. 1984. Among the welders exposed to high chromium levels 5 deaths occurred due to pulmonary tumors. This number is significantly greater than the one death that occurred among the welders exposed to low levels of chromium, but not significantly greater than the corresponding mortality of the general population. Thus exposure to stainless steel welding fumes might be associated with an increased incidence of pulmonary tumors.

Health hazards of occupational exposure to welding fumes when working with sheet metal coated with anti-corrosion oil

Medical thesis. Hazard evaluation: observation of the work-station and of fume formation; sampling of the workplace air, particularly for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that are thermal degradation products of anti-corrosion oils. The toxicity of the fumes, and the resulting respiratory health problems and carcinogenicity, are extrapolated from a survey of the literature. Short-term health effects are studied in a group of welders in an automobile manufacturing plant. These effects include obstructive and restrictive respiratory disorders in non-smokers. Preventive measures include the degreasing of parts, the use of oils that have been properly refined and exhaust ventilation. Personal hygiene and medical prevention are discussed.

Results of tests conducted by the French Welding Institute on 40-odd welding torches of 6 different makes, sold between 1979 and 1982. The testing procedure followed French experimental standards A 84-340 and A 84-350 (dated Nov. 1982) and, for some of the equipment, draft standard ISO/DIS 5175. It involved testing for external leakage, internal leakage during slow flashbacks, loss of pressure, explosive flashbacks. Some of the tests provided data useful for the design and standardisation of these devices.

Uptake and urinary excretion of aluminium by welders

The concentration of aluminium in urine depended on the level and duration of exposure. Postshift urinary excretion of aluminium prior to an exposure-free interval was related to the prevailing air concentration, whereas the urinary excretion of aluminium determined after the exposure-free interval was related to total exposure duration (years). The biological half-time of aluminium excreted in the urine of welders exposed for less than 1yr was about 9 days. Welders exposed for more than 10yrs continued to excrete relatively large amounts of aluminium, even after an exposure-free interval, and the biological half-time was calculated to be 6 months or longer. Thus aluminium is retained in at least 2 functional compartments of the body and eliminated from these compartments at different rates.

Long-time exposure can give chronic bronchitis and changes in tooth enamel and in bones. Highly corrosive. Ingestion can lead to unconsciousness and kidney damage. Further studies on the exposure of welders to fumes, chromium, nickel and gases in Dutch industries: Plasma welding and cutting of stainless steel
Welding environments were sampled and analysed in 6 industries. Concentrations of welding fumes were sometimes higher than standards when there was no ventilation. Concentrations of chromium, nickel, nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide were lower than standards. Ozone concentration during microplasma welding were very high until a glass screen was used to protect the welder. There was no extremely high concentration of any gas.

Measurement of blue-light effective radiance of welding arcs
Several animal studies have confirmed that exposure to visible light in the 400-500nm wavelength region can produce photochemical lesion on the retina. An instrument to measure blue light was developed, and the effective radiance of welding arcs was determined under 14 different welding conditions. The meter is suitable for the measurement of radiation in which the light intensity is distributed widely in the spectrum, but it is unsuitable when the light intensity is localised around only a few wavelengths.

Combined general and local ventilation systems and heating of welding shops

The combination of general and local ventilation may afford effective ventilation of welding shops. General ventilation of welding shops, especially those with several bays, should make use of an air piston which will work with individual mobile suction nozzles to provide effective fume extraction. Joint action of floor heating and the combined general and local ventilation system is recommended for winter.

Sound and ultrasound emission during ultrasonic welding - Hazards and preventive measures
Emissions sonores et ultrasonores lors du soudage par ultrasons - Risques et moyens de prévention [in French]
The levels, nature and frequency of acoustic vibrations (sound and ultrasound) at 56 ultrasound welding machine work stations were studied. A comparison of the results with recommended limit values in effect in France (relating to noise and ultrasound) revealed risks to the health of workers. This article presents preventive methods (enclosure, sound reduction at source, acoustic damping, screens, etc.) that have already been tested and whose effectiveness has been measured.

Air dustiness during welding with variable-diameter ER-146 electrodes in machine shops equipped with general and local ventilation was examined. The amount of free silica in the dust was 5.6-14.3%. Results of measurements showed that local ventilation was more effective than general ventilation.

Toxicity of welding fume in rats
This report contains results of a study made on the toxicity of welding fumes in rats. Six welding fumes were administered to rats by inhalation to determine relative ranking of toxicity. Fumes used were generated from E6010, E7018, E70S-3, E70T-I, E308-16 and E5356 consumables. Results were evaluated in terms of acute inhalation toxicity, pulmonary pathologic and fibrogenic potential, in vivo cytogenetic potential and mutagenic potential of urinary excretions. Sampling in the chamber included measurement of particle concentration and size, ozone, carbon monoxide, and the oxides of nitrogen. The summary report contains text of the study findings and selected tabular data. The complete report contains the same text, with the tabular data in its entirety.
