Health aspects of biotechnology
This is a review of biotechnological processes and of their health implications for workers. Most of the hazards associated with industrial fermentation, not a new process, are known. Newer processes, such as the manufacturing of certain pharmaceuticals and enzymes on a large scale, can lead to direct effects on human tissue, or to allergic reactions. So far no new hazards have been identified in connection with genetic manipulation (work with recombinant DNA), but care should be taken to prevent such hazards from developing.

Clinical and immunological reactions to Aspergillus niger among workers at a biotechnology plant
Workers at a biotechnology plant producing critic acid by fermentation of molasses with a strain of the fungus Aspergillus niger were studied. A combination of a respiratory questionnaire and clinical assessment identified 18 workers (4.9% of the workforce) with work-related bronchospasm. Half of these cases produced evidence of sensitisation to A. niger. Of the 325 other workers examined, 9 had a positive prick test. No worker had symptoms of extrinsic allergic alveolitis. Though spores of A. niger were not found in all parts of the plant, fungal antigens were detected in air samples taken everywhere. It is suggested that antigens in the plant air originated in the counter curent washing water, which is sprayed in the manufacturing process during the purification of calcium citrate. Because of the risk of sensitisation to such aerosol proteins as well as to fungal spores, the need for careful hygiene control in this industry is emphasised.
