Damage to fittings in superheated steam piping
Schäden an Formstücken von Heissdampfleitungen [in German]
Description of the features and causes of circumferential cracks in pipe joints and initial cracks in thin-wall multiway pipe unions. In nearly all cases, the damage was detected and repaired before any serious consequencs occurred. A number of cracks occurred long before the safe service life, calculated on the basis of internal operating pressure, had been reached. Curvature in superheated steam piping systems due to the weight of the piping is considered briefly and necessary design precautions are discussed. Regular inspection of components exposed to high temperatures, especially fittings and cock and valve housing, is essential.

Statutory safety testing of pressure piping and vessels in a rolling mill
Pruebas reglamentarias de seguridad a realizar en tuberías y recipientes sometidos a presión, existentes en una planta de laminación [in Spanish]
Since the compulsory safety testing of all the 105 pressure vessels in a rolling mill together with the total piping system fell due on virtually the same date, a staggered testing programme was drawn up to ensure that the tests did not have any undesirable effects on production. The various phases of this programme are described and commented upon.

CIS 72-2539 Preventing contamination of industrial gases in cylinders
Forebyggende tiltak mot forurensing av industrigasser på gassflasker [in Norwegian]
Contamination of compressed, liquefied or dissolved industrial gases may have dangerous consequences, and prevention entails close collaboration between manufacturers and users. It is recommended that the contents of cylinders should be checked, only the prescribed cylinder and fittings should be used for each individual type of gas, grease and oil should be carefully removed from valves and threads, cylinders should never be completely emptied (but returned to the works with a small pressure inside and the valve closed), gas should not be filled from one bottle to another unless the hazards involved are fully understood, and in the event of suspected contamination or damage, the supplier should be contacted immediately.

Bursting disc design
Opyt razrabotki i izgotovlenija hlopajuščih predohranitel'nyh membran [in Russian]
The authors present a bursting disc design intended for low-pressure vessels. The disc is concave, under the action of a rapid pressure rise, becomes convex and, in doing so, strikes against a tearing spike. It is designed and manufactured to ensure that the machining accuracy of the retaining rings does not effect its response. In order to overcome any influences dependent on variations in material quality, a quality control system is employed in which all the discs, whose curvature does not conform to certain tolerances, are rejected; to this end, it is essential that the dishing process to produce the convex curvature is always carried out at the same pressure. Consequently rupture always takes place at between 1.7 and 2mgf/cm2.

Blow-off tests on steam-scavenged pilot valves on two free flow radiant boilers
Abblaseversuche an gesteuerten Sicherheitsventilen im Ruhestromprinzip an zwei Naturumlauf-Strahlungskesseln [in German]
Following an accident caused by 2 safety valves failing to open in the super-heating circuit of a thermal power station, various blow-off tests were carried out. The author describes the device and the test procedures, analyses the pressure diagrams for various tests, and draws conclusions. The excessive time lag in valve closure was attributable to the formation of deposits on the moving parts of the pilot valves. The author recommends the use of stainless steel for the manufacture of pilot and impulse-transmission pipes; perfect welds must be ensured to avoid the formation of weld heads and slag.

Zur Entwicklung von hochporösen Massen, ihre Eignung als Füllmassen für Acetylenbehälter und zulässige Acetylen- und Acetonfüllungen in mit solchen Massen präparierten Behältern [in German]
Having reviewed the principles governing the decomposition of acetylene and the design of acetylene cylinders, the Federal German Materials Testing Laboratory reviews the development of porous substances and solvents for acetylene cylinders. Following drop, ignition and heating tests on high-porousity substances (90% porous monolithic silicates) in full acetylene cylinders, it is now possible to recommend porous masses which allow 27-33% more acetylene by weight. Permissible degrees of filling for various types of cylinder are shown in tabular form.

Silencer units for turbocompressors
Kompleks glušitelej šuma dlja turbokompressorov [in Russian]
Description of silencer units for the intake and exhaust openings of a heavy-duty turbocompressor installation in an engineering works. The intake silencer comprises 2 chambers; the first contains vertically-staggered hollow sheet-metal baffles filled with mineral wool; the second contains horizontally-arranged baffles. The exhaust air passes through 2 layers of crushed quarry stone constituting the exhaust silencer. These simple but effective silencers reduce the intake noise level by 25dB at 1000Hz and 40dB at 8000Hz; the exhaust noise level is reduced by 57dB and 67dB, respectively. The article contains diagrams of the intake and exhaust noise spectra and drawings of the silencer units.

Hydraulic and dry acetylene back-pressure valves
Wasser- und Trockenvorlagen für Azetylen [in German]
In spite of their extremely simple design, hydraulic back-pressure valves on acetylene supply lines have the disadvantage of requiring daily adjustment. The author describes a dry back-pressure valve which makes this adjustment unneccessary. The flashback-prevention function is carried out by 2 successive flame barriers, a percussion piston operated by the explosion wave and a cut-off valve which prevents gas flow. A diaphragm type non-return valve prevents oxygen back flow. The author reviews the performance of this valve and reports on tests and operating experience.
