CIS 01-351 Beije B., Lundberg P.
DECOS and NEG basis for an occupational standard - Glutaraldehyde
Glutaraldehyde is used mainly as a fixative in electron microscopy, a disinfectant for instruments and in the chemical industry. Glutaraldehyde is a skin and mucous membrane irritant, a skin allergen and may cause respiratory allergic reactions. Histopathological effects in the nose have been demonstrated in rats and mice. Glutaraldehyde is genotocic in vitro and induces mutations in bacteria and mammalian cells; it also produces sister chromatid exchanges and chromosomal aberrations in mammalian cells.

CIS 01-350 Stouten H.
DECOS and NEG basis for an occupational standard - Isopropyl acetate
Isopropyl acetate is a solvent used in paints. Limited human studies show it to be an irritant. Animal studies show it to be of low toxicity. It was negative in most genotoxic test systems but was a weak inducer of aneuploidy.
Arbetslivsinstitutet, Förlagstjänst, 171 84 Solna, Sweden, 1997. v, 15p. 47 ref.

CIS 01-349 Lindell B.
DECOS and NEG basis for an occupational standard - Platinum
The most significant health risk from exposure to soluble platinum compounds is sensitization of the airways. During production and handling hexachloroplanitic acid and certain complex halogenated salts of platinum, allergic symptoms involving the respiratory tract and the skin have occurred. Smokers seem to be more susceptible to the sensitizing effects of platinum salts. Elicitation of allergic symptoms occur at platinum levels below 2µg/m3. Many platinum salts are mutagenic in vitro, but it is not possible to draw conclusions regarding the genotoxic risk in the work environment.

Wood dust and nasal cancer risk: A review of the evidence from North America
The considerable differences in risks of nasal cancer among woodworkers in North America and Europe are reviewed. Studies of American wood-dust-exposed groups do not reveal excesses of nasal cancer. High rates of nasal adenocarcinoma have instead occurred among European hardwood furniture workers. As implication for industrial hygiene standards the risk of cancer in exposed workers appears to be preventable if wood-dust exposures do not exceed an 8-hour time-weighted average of 5mg/m3.

Effects of 10-ppm hydrogen sulfide inhalation in exercising men and women: Cardiovascular, metabolic and biochemical responses
The acute effects of 10-ppm hydrogen sulfide (H2S) inhalation, a concentration equal to the 8h TWA occupational exposure limit recommended by NIOSH, were examined in 28 healthy volunteers, after two 30-minute exercise sessions at 50% of their maximal oxygen uptake. A decrease in oxygen uptake, with a concomitant increase in blood lactate, was observed in men and women. No significant changes were observed in arterial blood parameters and cardiovascular responses. There was a tendency for muscle lactate to increase and citrate synthase to decrease in both sexes in the presence of H2S. These changes in oxygen uptake are probably caused by an inhibition of aerobic capacity of the exercising muscle. The appropriateness of the current occupational exposure limit for H2S should therefore be re-examined.

Elevated blood lead levels in children of construction workers
Workers with high potential household contamination should be considered as a possible pathway for lead exposure of young children. 29 construction workers were identified from a New Jersey registry including workers with blood lead levels of 25µg/dL. 26% of these workers' children had blood lead levels at or over the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention action level of 0.48µmol/L (10µg/dL), compared with 5% of neighbourhood control children.

Terpene exposure and respiratory effects among workers in Swedish joinery shops
A cross-sectional study of 38 workers was carried out in 4 joinery shops in Sweden to evaluate acute respiratory effects following exposure to terpenes, while processing Scotch pine. Personal exposure to terpenes ranged between 10 and 214mg/m3. No acute effects on forced vital capacity or forced expiratory volume during 1s were detected. Personal exposure to terpenes may thus exceed the present Swedish occupational exposure limit of 150mg/m3 during the winter season when workrooms air is commonly recirculated. The determination of metabolites of alpha-pinene (verbenols) in urine can be used as an index of exposure to fumes released during wood-treating processes.
