Aldicarb - Health and safety guide
This document provides practical guidance on the application of exposure limitation guidelines contained in Environmental Health Criteria 121 (see CIS 91-1955). Contents: identity and uses of aldicarb; human health hazards; health surveillance and first aid; safety in storage and use; environmental hazards; summary of chemical safety information for use in the workplace; current regulations and guidelines. Aldicarb induces toxicity by cholinesterase inhibition. Poisoning may affect the respiratory and central nervous systems and may cause death. Nonfatal poisoning in humans is rapidly reversible and recovery is aided by the administration of atropine.

Atopic allergy to chloramine-T and the demonstration of specific IgE antibodies by the radioallergosorbent test
Chloramine-T is a small molecular oxidizing agent that has been widely used as a disinfectant since the beginning of this century. It is generally used in a 5% solution but it is also supplied in powder form. Sporadic case reports of immediate-type sensitization to this agent associated with symptoms of asthma, rhinitis and urticaria have appeared during recent decades. In one of the reports, specific IgE antibodies in sera of four patients who developed asthmatic symptoms after exposure to chloramine-T were demonstrated using a radioimmuno-assay. Three cases of bronchial asthma in workers who had handled chloramine-T powder are described in the present report. Positive skin prick test reactions to chloramine-T were observed and specific IgE antibodies to human serum albumin treated with chloramine-T were detected using the classic radioallergosorbent (RAST) technique in all three patients.

Substance exposures in the textile industry
Stoffbelastungen in der Textilindustrie [in German]
In 8 German textile plants information on the manufacturing processes, work organisation, hygiene installations and exposed workers was collected. At selected workplaces the concentrations of dusts, vapours and gases were measured. Dust exposure was highest in dyehouses where they ranged from values below the detection limit to 3.46mg/m3 in personal samples. Of the organic solvents used, dimethylformamide levels approached or exceeded the exposure limit. Summaries in English and French.

Dimethylformamide-induced liver damage among synthetic leather workers
The purpose of this study was to determine liver damage associated with dimethylformamide (DMF) exposure. Liver function tests, and creatinine phosphokinase (CPK) determinations were performed on 183 workers of a synthetic leather factory. Air concentrations of solvents were also measured. High exposure concentrations of DMF (25-60ppm) were significantly associated with elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels (ALT≥35IU/L), a result that did not change even after stratification by hepatitis B carrier status. The study demonstrates that exposure to high concentrations of DMF was associated with an elevated ALT (p=0.01), whereas hepatitis B surface antigen was slightly but independently associated with an elevated ALT (p=0.07). In those workers who had normal ALT values, there occurred still significantly higher mean ALT and aspartate aminotransferase activities, especially among those who were not hepatitis B surface antigen carriers. A significant association existed between elevated CPK levels and exposure to DMF. Liver damage among synthetic leather workers is ascribed to DMF but it is recommended that the occupational standard for DMF and its toxicity among hepatitis B surface antigen carriers be evaluated further.

Reentry after methomyl application in greenhouses
To establish practical reentry intervals in greenhouses, decay patterns of methomyl were assessed. Methomyl is a toxic carbamate insecticide with a reversible, mild to moderate cholinesterase-inhibiting activity. The investigation was carried out under conditions of normal work practice in four greenhouses during six test runs with various combinations of the factors: substrate (soil or rock wool), plant type (cucumber or tomato), wet or dry spraying, area of the greenhouse, and dosage of application. Personal and area samples of the air, hand rinse samples, leaf samples, and samples of the soil surface or the plastic cover of the rock wool were taken during a period of 7 days after application of methomyl. The implications for establishing reentry intervals are discussed.

Dimethylformamide and testicular cancer
Letter to the editor. Studies on leather tanners and aircraft maintenance men have associated testicular cancer with exposure to dimethylformamide (DMF). However, DMF lacks mutagenic activity in animals and other studies of industrial populations have shown no causal relation between exposure to DMF and the cancers studied. It is suggested that DMF may simply be acting as a solvent which facilitates absorption through the skin of dissolved carcinogens.

NIOH and NIOSH basis for an occupational health standard - Acrylamide: A review of the literature
This review was prepared by NIOSH in co-operation with the Swedish National Institute of Occupational Health (NIOH). It covers the available literature on the toxicology, methods for monitoring exposure and the relationship between exposure and adverse health effects of acrylamide. It is concluded that acrylamide monomer may be neurotoxic, carcinogenic, genotoxic and hazardous to reproduction. Recent studies confirm that acrylamide exposures may cause cancer and reproductive effects in animals, although epidemiologic studies have not demonstrated these effects in humans. It is considered that acrylamide should be regarded as a potential occupational carcinogen.

Aldicarb
This criteria document surveys the available literature on the toxicology of aldicarb, a highly toxic pesticide. Accidental poisoning and a controlled laboratory study resulted in cholinergic symptoms including blurred vision, muscle weakness, nausea, dyspnoea and diarrhoea. Intoxication and poisoning due to occupational exposure are known to have occurred as a result of a neglect of recommended safety precautions. It is recommended that the handling and application of aldicarb should be undertaken by trained applicators and its use in agriculture should be restricted to situations where less hazardous substitutes are unavailable. A summary of the document is given in both French and Spanish.

Dimethylformamide
Direct contact with dimethylformamide (DMF) has been reported to cause skin irritation and conjunctivitis. Accidental exposure to high levels of DMF causes abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and fatigue. Liver function may be disturbed and blood pressure changes, tachycardia and ECG abnormalities have been reported. Following long-term repeated exposure, symptoms include headache, loss of appetite, and fatigue. Liver damage seems to occur when the DMF exposure level exceeds 30mg/m3, in the absence of skin contact. Exposure to DMF, even at concentrations below 30mg/m3, may cause alcohol intolerance. There is limited evidence that DMF is carcinogenic in humans. Detailed summaries in French and Spanish.
