They deal with the scope of such examinations. Supplementary information is given on sources of hazard, how low temperatures act on the body, and a clinical picture of health damage due to cold.

In view of the practical impossibility of eliminating all fire hazards in laboratories, the author recommends that the quantities of highly flammbale liquids (flash point below 21-25°C) kept on the premises should be strictly limited and that unbreakable vessels should be used. To protect stored liquids in case of outbreak of fire, the author recommends the use of ventilated metal cupboards which close automatically when a preselected temperature level is exceeded. Brief comments on unbreakable receptacles and their labelling.

Health problems in the use of high-lift trucks

After recalling the hazards of toxic exhaust gases (CO, CO2, nitrous gases), the author reviews various preventive measures (catalytic postcombustion exhaust chambers, air monitoring, use of suitable fuels, tuning the motor), analyses the relevant Czech regulations, and reports on the results of CO measurements made on power trucks with and without catalytic combustion devices under different operating conditions of the motor. The space utilisation of the store in which the trucks are used may affect the pollution level. The author observed considerable ignorance of the regulations in very many cases and he stresses the advantages of trucks using propane-butane gas over petrol- and diesel-powered engines in respect of exhaust CO.

Description, with illustrations and comments, of the processes taken in sequence, together with the occupational safety and health measures observed as from the delivery bay and storage area down to the machining department.

Barriers for noise control.
After introductory remarks on prediction methods for attenuation, a system of noise abatement in a refrigerator compressor room by the use of screens is reported. The design of test enclosures is described; the results of indoor and outdoor attenuation tests are shown in diagrams and discussed. Conclusions are drawn concerning the design of the enclosure and the value of the methods for the prediction of attenuation. The noise reduction of an enclosure is improved if a partial or full top can be provided.

Amendment to the directives analysed under CIS 74-1229: A sign must be affixed on or near the door in cold-storage rooms, explaining how help can be obtained if the door is accidentally locked. The emergency signal switch must have a built-in lamp and must be kept free from stacked goods. Cold-storage rooms having a surface of more than 25m2 must be equipped with an emergency lighting system.

This code, intended as a guide for those responsible for enforcing safety requirements, deals with safe practices in storing and handling liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in cylinders in quantities normally exceeding 50kg. Part 1 is devoted to general considerations (definitions, characteristics and hazards of LPG, cylinder keeping and handling, LPG cylinders, cylinder valves and fittings, protection of designated storage areas, fire protection, electrical requirements, emergency procedures). Part 2 covers the keeping of cylinders (storage places and minimum separation distances, electrical requirements, fire protection), and Part 3 is devoted to operations (training, fixed installations, regulating equipment, action in emergency). Guidelines on the storage of nominally empty LPG cylinders and a test to determine if a package is "not readily ignitible" are appended.

CIS 74-2049 European Model Code of safe practice in the storage and handling of petroleum products - Part I: Operations.
This code was prepared by a working group consisting of experts from 10 Western European countries. It consists of short guidelines and technical advice on general precautions, injuries and medical services, permits to work, fire prevention and fighting, jetties, pipework, storage tanks, static electricity, electrical equipment, road vehicles, tank cars, handling of bitumen products, liquefied petroleum gases, packed products and training of personnel. The code is supplemented by 10 appendices, including a suggested syllabus for a 2-day course on fire prevention and emergency action for managers of oil installations.

Owing to the gassing hazard in cold-storage rooms with controlled atmospheres containing more than 0.5% of CO2, workers should be supplied with self-contained respiratory equipment.

The work environment's influence on the cardiovascular system - Polycardiographic investigations in workers exposed to trichloroethylene.
Reported cases of sudden death due to the chronic effects of trichloroethylene (TCE) leading to ventricular fibrillation, and also the changes observed in the stroke volume and cardiac output indicate an effect of TCE on the cardiovascular system. The authors examined 20 exposed female workers using the polycardiographic method. The urinary output of trichloroacetic acid and trichloroethanol was used as a test of exposure. Phase structure changes of the left ventricular systole were observed in persons exposed to levels above the MAC. The early diagnosis of these changes in workers exposed to TCE is important for the prevention of more serious subsequent cardiovascular changes.

There are chapters on: properties of ammonia; personal protective equipment; safety measures to be taken in the event of ammonia escape, accidents and fires; installation of fixed storage tanks for liquid ammonia; requirements to be met by the materials for, and construction of, containers and means of transport; loading and unloading equipment for ammonia tank trucks and tankers; safety measures for the transport of liquid ammonia for use in agriculture.

CIS 74-1659 Safety requirements for the storage and handling of anhydrous ammonia.
This standard applies to the design, construction, location, installation and operation of anhydrous ammonia systems (including refrigerated ammonia storage systems but excluding ammonia manufacturing plants, refrigerating or air-conditioning systems and ammonia transportation pipelines). Basic rules cover: equipment; testing, marking and location of containers; container valves, piping, tubing, fittings and hose connections; charging of containers; transfer of liquids; tank car unloading; liquid level gauging devices; painting of containers. Systems utilising portable containers and stationary non-refrigerated storage containers, tank motor vehicles, systems mounted on farm vehicles and refrigerated storage systems are also dealt with.

Following a review of the accidents which occurred in quarry silos and bunkers in the Federal Republic of Germany during the period 1961-1970, the author describes and analyses a number of individual accidents. There has been an increase in the number of fatal accidents to persons who entered silos on their own initiative to remove bridges that had formed. Information is given on design measures and mechanical plant which can be used to prevent or eliminate bridging without exposing the workers to risks. Permanent instruction of employees is essential.

These regulations under the Labour Code, Part IV (safety of EmSployees) specify that, when required by the safety officer, employers must ensure that maximum safe load of materials handling equipment, floors, docks or other structures is determined and reported by a qualified person. Equipment and structures must be: suitable and safe for their purpose; maintained in safe condition; in compliance with regulations. Equipment operators must be: physically fit; trained and instructed; families warith highway vehicle laws. Recognised standards are adopted where applicable. In addition to general rules, the 5-part regulations govern: design, construction, operation, use and maintenance of materials handling equipmentl; manual handling of materials and safe storage of materials.

A survey carried out over a period of more than 10 years showed that there was a saving of approximately 65% in manpower and energy expenditure when certain logging and timber-processing operations were carried out in mechanised timber yards instead of in the forest as previously; the reduction in energy expenditure amounted to only 50% in the case of logs. Detailed results of the technique used in the various operations are given in tables.
