Resumen Gas pipelines are blocked off by spherical rubber plugs when cutting or welding operations are to be performed. When the plugs are withdrawn at the end of the operation, detonation frequently occurs when gas mixes with the residual air in the pipe. Laboratory experiments with a section of typical piping showed that electrostatic fields of 1kV can be produced by withdrawal of a plug. At the observed surface charge density of 0.0006C/cm2, this is sufficient to produce a discharge with an energy above the minimum ignition energy of a gas-air mixture. Electrostatic charging could be reduced to safe levels by reducing the diameter of the tube through which the plug is retrieved and by wetting the space around the plug. Because thunderstorms can strongly ionise the atmosphere and produce substantial electrostatic charges even at high relative humidity, cutting and welding work on pipelines should be avoided in stormy weather.
