Resumen Histamine, serotonin and immunoglobulins were measured in the blood of workers exposed to toluene diisocyanate or feed protein. The workers were 20-40 years old, in good health, with 3-5 or more years of employment at their present jobs. Exposure to the allergens had no effect on biogenic amine levels. Exposure to toluene diisocyanate was correlated with reduced immunoglobulin levels, whereas exposure to protein was associated with elevated immunoglobulin levels, regardless of the sensitisation of individuals to either allergen. The shifts in immunoglobulin levels are probably adaptive; the elevated levels in the protein workers are probably more favourable to their health.
