Resumen The problems associated with this question and electrical safety are reviewed. Subjects dealt with: present state of knowledge; influence of the contact surface in the event of an electrical accident and question of the high specific capacitance of the skin. Study of the structure and electrophysiology of the human skin suggested the analogy of a brush for the arrangement of the ducts of the sweat glands beneath the skin. This model can explain how the characteristics of the skin affect the behaviour of the body impedance in the event of passage of an electric current. Above 200V skin impedance and the contact area are of only secondary importance, and only the internal impedance of the body has a decisive influence on the severity of accidents.
