Título Carcinogenic potential of formaldehyde in occupational settings: A critical assessment and possible impact on occupational exposure levels
Información bibliográfica May 2008, Vol.81, No.6, p.695-710. Illus. 54 ref.
Resumen This literature survey reviewed epidemiological studies investigating the association between occupational exposure to formaldehyde and nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) risk having led to a change in the classification of formaldehyde by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 2004, as well as studies published thereafter, with the objective to examine whether occupational exposure levels for formaldehyde should be changed. Human studies concerning the carcinogenicity of formaldehyde are not conclusive. Experimental data indicate that in rats, the carcinogenic activity of formaldehyde is associated with cytotoxic mechanisms. Current exposure limits are sufficient for protecting from these effects and should therefore be sufficient to protect from potential carcinogenic effects, if any in humans.
