Resumen The objective of this cross-sectional study was to analyse occupational accidents involving exposure to biological materials that have occurred at a Brazilian university hospital, as well as preventive actions. Data were obtained from the Brazilian occupational accident prevention network (REPAT) for the years 2003 and 2004, and subjected to statistical analyses. Among the approximately 2000 workers employed at that time, 107 accidents were recorded. Most occurred in the morning, among women, and involved a perforating hand injury caused by needles and catheters. Preventive actions including training, visits to work places and individual orientation, need to be revised and expanded.
