Abstract Conclusions of this criteria document on gaseous chlorine dioxide: given the highly reactive nature of the product, it seems likely that health effects would be restricted to local responses. Animal experiments show the high acute inhalation and ingestion toxicities. Severe skin and respiratory tract irritation has been observed in rats. Long-term inhalation exposure testing in animals show indications of nasal tissue and respiratory tract damage. Eye and respiratory tact irritation has been observed in humans. There are no reports of skin sensitization or asthma associated with occupational exposure to the product.
