Abstract For safety shoes to be accepted by users, they have to be well adapted to the foot. The inside of the shoe must comply with anatomic requirements resulting from different foot morphologies. BAUA, the German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, has specified the shape of the shoe sole that satisfies these anatomic requirements, as well as a system for measuring different foot widths that manufacturers have to implement even though they retain a certain margin for the design of different models. A method that enables the measurement of the interior dimensions of shoes is therefore required. This report describes such a method based on a tool developed at the institute.
