Abstract Carbon monoxide (CO) is a highly dangerous gas capable of causing death in a few seconds. During 1997, there were 106 occupational accidents in France involving a loss of work time following acute CO poisoning. Contents of this review article on CO poisoning at work: definition of the hazard; conditions of exposure, in particular in the construction industry; pathophysiological mechanisms; preventive measures; trends in the number of cases of occupational diseases due to CO; French and European regulations.
