Abstract |
This profile was prepared in accordance with guidelines set by the US Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and the EPA. The key literature related to the toxic effects of toluene is identified and reviewed. Contents: public health statement; health effects; chemical and physical information; production, import, use and disposal; potential for human exposure; analytical methods; regulations and advisories; glossary. Health hazards include: irritation of the respiratory tract; neurologic disorders (with possible changes in the brain); neurotoxic (narcosis) and neuropsychic effects; possible liver and kidney damage; increased risk of spontaneous abortion; alterations of the heart rhythm; embryotoxic effects.
