Title How to reduce workplace accidents

Abstract Each year, approximately 5,500 people die in occupational accidents in the European Union. There are also more than 4.5 million accidents that result in more than three days' absence from work, amounting to a loss of 146 million working days. With the objective of strengthening the knowledge base on accident prevention, this report presents 22 successful accident-prevention approaches from the 15 European Union member states. In particular, the following hazards, industries and sectors are covered: falling overboard ships; prevention in the security industry; farm accidents; safety in the food and drink industry; falls from heights in the construction industry; preventing road accidents among highway patrol police forces; safety in the construction industry; alcohol awareness for truck drivers; hazards from dust fires and explosions; prevention in the textile and clothing industries, including avoiding needle pricks; prevention in navigable waterway transport; safety management in the steel industry.
