Abstract The lack of scientific and technical knowledge in certain complex fields have led to the adoption of European standards based on insufficiently validated tests, relying sometimes on an empirical approach. For example, personal protective equipment (PPE) which passes the tests required by the standards can nevertheless prove to be unsatisfactory when used at work. Several research investigations have already been carried out on equipment such as fall-arresting systems, protective clothing, and gloves, by several safety and health institutes in Europe. The results suggest practical solutions to improve the validity of several European test methods and to focus more on informing and training workers on the proper way of wearing PPE, in particular respiratory protective equipment and hearing protectors.
