Abstract Worldwide, approximately 13 million workers are employed in small-scale surface mines, mostly in the informal sector in developing countries. Occupational safety and health regulations are not always adapted to small-scale surface mining, and may require revision. This booklet sets out a few basic principles for use in the absence of specific regulations, or in conjunction with them. Contents: objectives, scope and definitions; general principles and provisions; mining accidents and dangerous occurrences; hazards in the working environment; health, welfare and hygiene of mineworkers; first aid; personal protective equipment; safety when mining; mechanical equipment; explosives and blasting; mine closures.
