Abstract The fatality and reportable injury rate in the South African mining industry declined during the year 2000, continuing the 16-year general downward trend, and currently stands at 0.71 and 12.72 per thousand workers, respectively. Hearing loss, tuberculosis and silicosis are the major occupational health concerns. Other topics covered in this annual report: mine safety and health reports, safety and health surveys, safety and health equipment, management involvement and internal control, and regional reports, including safety and health reviews, inspections, audits, compliance with legislation, penalties and hazard evaluation.
