Abstract Cigarette smoke in ambient air consists mostly of smoke generated by the incandescent cone or exhaled by smokers. The physical, chemical and toxicological properties of these two constituents are considerably different. For this reason, the evaluation of the risk linked to the exposure to tobacco smoke must be carried out on the basis of the various substances present in the smoke. Several detection methods have been developed and validated. The examination of the weighted average values of the various harmful substances contained in cigarette smoke in ambient air show that the exposure of non-smokers to toxic and genotoxic substances contained in cigarette smoke is relatively low. This hypothesis is validated by monitoring of nitrosamine and its metabolites in the biological liquids of passive smokers.
