Abstract Flexibility is a heterogeneous concept linking quantitative, qualitative, external and internal variables. This study, based on research carried out in seven European Union Member States, aims at defining working conditions and examines their reliance on various forms of flexibility. Main topics covered: flexibility strategies at the corporate level; impact of flexibility on conditions of work and of employment; role of national industrial relations system (legislation, labour relation system); areas of future investigation and action.
