Abstract Certain substances used at the workplace can damage the skin. This guidance booklet is aimed at employers and safety and health specialists who may have to provide skin care products for workers. Main topics covered: signs and symptoms of occupational dermatitis (contact dermatitis, eczema) and industrial sectors involved; how dermatitis is caused (irritation, sensitization); employers' responsibilities; various types of skin care products (pre-work or barrier creams, skin cleansers, after-work creams or moisturisers) and their effectiveness; allergic reactions to skin care products; criteria for choosing skin care products. An appendix includes examples of substances which can cause dermatitis.
