Abstract Although the need for wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) is widely recognized within the surface treatment industry as being important, PPE is not always worn due to alleged lack of comfort by some operators. A study was carried out in three firms in this industry in order to compare the PPE traditionally used by the operators and new devices having improved levels of protection, comfort and useful life. As a result of these tests, the firms noted greater operator awareness of risks and a substantial increase in wearing.
