Abstract Cyanoacrylate-based adhesives are widespread in many industrial and domestic as well as medical applications. The most apparent effect of exposure to their vapours is acute irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract. Cyanoacrylates cause skin sensitization and asthma. They are mutagenic in the Ames test and are suspected to be carcinogenic and to induce peripheral neuropathy. Exposure limits (2ppm = 8-10mg/m3 in most jurisdictions) are based on the irritant effect.
