Abstract This study of occupational hazards in graphic arts was conducted by a group of occupational physicians. It provides a survey of the techniques and work tasks associated with different kinds of traditional and modern printing and binding technologies, together with the corresponding industrial hazards. Relevant French legislation is summarized, with particular attention to the laws and regulations relating to exposure to organic solvents and lead. Statistics are also given for occupational diseases and accidents in the sector in France.
