Abstract This report contains the results of a study investigating problems experienced by drivers entering or leaving the cabs of large quarry vehicles. Recent statistics show a high injury risk associated with slips, trips and falls. Telephone interviews were conducted and site visits organized in order to observe the range of vehicles and the methods of access and egress used. It was found that in many cases the standard basic dimensions of the access systems were not satisfied, and in particular the height of the first step: of 13 vehicles evaluated, none met the requirement for the basic dimension (400mm); all but two met the requirements for maximum height. Recommendations are made to manufacturers to integrate ergonomics early in their design process.
