Abstract This article explores the potential for psychological resources in accident prevention in industries such as petroleum refining and petrochemicals, which involve working with dangerous and toxic materials. Human factors may account for up to 70% of accidents. Therefore, personal traits such as memory, attention, sensorimotor capacity, sense of responsibility, care, competence and self-control are evaluated as to their importance for machine operators, engineers and foremen. Insufficiencies in some of theses traits may lead to occupational diseases and accidents, to poor work achievements and to high staff turnover.
