||Rail transportation of hazardous materials in the United States
||June 1999, Vol.30, No.6, p.8-17. Illus.
||Rail transportation of hazardous materials in the United States is recognized to be the safest method of moving large quantities of chemicals over long distances. Continuous improvements in rail equipment, container design and construction, and inspection and maintenance methods have resulted in steady reductions in the numbers of derailments, spills, leaks and casualties while the volume of traffic has increased. Research into safety improvements is sponsored by industry and government and much is carried out by the Transportation Technology Center, Inc. (TTCI), a subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads. TTCI also maintains important safety and training services for carriers, shippers, and manufacturers of hazardous materials containers.
