Abstract Exercises performed by four mine rescue workers wearing regenerative chemical oxygen respirators showed that pulse rates remained distinctly lower, compared to those recorded in exercises with heavier compressed air respirators. The exercises were conducted on a 25% slope tread mill and an endless ladder. The mine rescue workers had to climb the equivalent of 90m in height on the treadmill and 60m on the extension ladder. The experiments were conducted under normal conditions without insulating clothing. Results confirmed the subjective assessment of the two types of respirators by the mine rescue workers. The regenerative chemical oxygen equipment is recommended for long rescue operations.
