Abstract Events at the Salonit Anhovo asbestos cement factory in Slovenia that led to the banning of asbestos in Slovenia in 1996 are described. Two different perspectives are presented: the story of the company management which realized the risks of using asbestos and proposed its ban in Slovenia; and the story of the local non-governmental organization that first discovered the dangers of asbestos and began a long struggle to protect workers, community and the environment.
