Abstract A comprehensive programme to reduce exposure to environmental allergens was implemented in a large pharmaceutical company. The programme included education, engineering controls, administrative controls, use of personal protective equipment and medical surveillance. Results of a prospective survey of five years of data showed that the prevalence of laboratory animal allergy ranged from 12% to 22% and that the incidence was reduced to zero during the last two years of observation. Laboratory animal allergy is preventable through the implementation of a comprehensive effort to reduce exposure to allergens. Topics: allergies; experimental animals; health programmes; laboratory work; limitation of exposure; long-term study; medical supervision; pharmaceutical industry; programme evaluation; protective clothing; risk factors; safety training in industry.
