Title Commuting, overtime and cardiac autonomic activity in Tokyo

Abstract The relation between short-term heart rate variability (HRV) and commuting time or overtime was investigated in 223 Japanese white-collar workers. Chronic stress or fatigue resulting from long commuting time or extensive overtime appeared to cause a sympathodominant state in these individuals. Although these shifts in HRV are not direct indicators of disease, they may induce cardiovascular abnormalities related to the onset of heart disease.
