Title Exposure to styrene and mortality from nervous system diseases and mental disorders
Bibliographic information Oct. 1996, Vol.144, No.7, p.623-633. Illus. 41 ref.
Abstract In an international historical cohort study, mortality from nervous system diseases, mental disorders and suicide was examined in relation to styrene exposure. The cohort comprised 35,443 workers employed during 1945-1991 in the reinforced plastics industry in six European countries (Denmark, Finland, Italy, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom). Exposure indicators were estimated from job histories and environmental and biological monitoring. Mortality from diseases of the central nervous system, especially epilepsy, increased with exposure to styrene. Findings indicate that, in addition to the known acute effects, exposure to styrene may contribute to chronic diseases of the central nervous system.
