Abstract This study extends a previous literature review undertaken to assess the current status of the modelling of the effects of thermal radiation from hydrocarbon fires. This review suggested that the 'Dangerous Dose' criterion of 1000(kW/m2)4/3s for an average population is a reasonable estimate of the thermal dose at which serious burns may be received or a small percentage of the population may die. The current study discusses the thermal dose level which would be suitable for use as a 'Lethal Dose' (LD50) equivalent and puts forward an estimated value of approximately 2000(kW/m2)4/3s. Assumptions and uncertainties in the estimation are discussed.
