Abstract A systematic summary of publications and documentation regarding working environment factors and the state of workers' health in the Danish chemical industry. About 49,000 people are employed in the industry, of which 1/5 work in the pharmaceutical sector. The main factors are: exposure to chemicals, accidents and strain injuries. Other factors are noise and whole-body vibration. These factors are common throughout the industry, but rubber and pharmaceutical factories, followed by those producing plastic packaging and plastic goods, are the most exposed sectors.
