Abstract Biological exposure indices are reference values corresponding either to concentrations of chemicals or their metabolites in biological fluids or exhaled air or to biological response to a chemical substance. These indices can be used to assess workers' exposure to chemicals and must be considered as complementary to occupational exposure limits in the air. This paper presents the definitions of biological exposure indices given by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists in the United States (BEI) and by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft in Germany (BAT), describes their advantages and limitations; adopted 1994-1995 values are given in table form. It cancels and replaces the previous one (CIS 93-1944).
